Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acacia Fraternity?
Acacia (uh-kay-shuh) is the only international social fraternity to have a Greek word rather than Greek letters as its name. Acacia was one of the charter members of the North-American Intrafraternity Conference in 1909. Our fundamental principles are scholarship, leadership, brotherhood and human service. Membership is open to all male students, undergrad and graduate, regardless of major.

Are you a new fraternity?
Although we were founded nationally in 1904, we were founded at Tech December 9, 2007.

Do you have a house? Would I have to live in it?
We have a house, at 109 E Louisiana Ave, a ten minute walk from the Quad. Unlike most fraternities at Tech, we consider our house our home. We have a comfortable chapter room, a tv room with satellite, a full kitchen that any member is free to use, laundry facilities, and a study room/computer lab. Any member, including pledges is welcome to use the common areas 24/7. The second floor has two single and two double rooms. Because the house only sleeps six, it is unlikely you will be required to live in it.

What social events do you participate in?
Along with our monthly themed party, we hold a variety of brotherhood events. In the past, we've taken trips to Monroe, gone out to Sundown, gone to the shooting range, tailgated, and taken a camping trip.

Do you do intramurals?
We field a flag football team, and will likely participate in other events in the 2009-2010 school year.

What community service do you do?
Every month we unload boxes for the North Louisiana Food Bank. We also have a christmas toy drive called "Acacia Claus" during the holiday season. In addition, we participate in other annual events, like the Relay for Life, the Kappa Delta Shamrock Run, and Tech's The Big Event. We are also in the process of starting more philanthropies of our own.

How much time will this take?
We work hard to make sure our members can enjoy their fraternity experience, and still lead a normal life. We have members who work fulltime, have demanding majors (double-major in nano and electrical engineering!), and participate in time-consuming campus activities. You can join Acacia and still have a life outside of it.

What's pledging like?
To become an active member, pledges must pass an examination on the history and traditions of the fraternity, complete level 1 of Acacia's membership development program (more info here), earn a 2.5 GPA, and complete a pledge plaque. Please ask if you have questions about these requirements.

How much does this cost?
Dues for 2009-2010 will be $665 for returning members and $650 for fall pledges. It is possible to pay per quarter or per month. Keep in mind that dues are only for four years, but fraternity membership is for life.

To live in the house is approximately $600 per quarter for a double room, and $750 for a single. We understand that most Tech students don't have the funds to pay hundreds of dollars in dues, and we work hard to keep our fraternity affordable.

I'm a parent. Is there someone I can talk to?
We want the parents of our new members to be as comfortable with Acacia as their sons are. Feel free to contact our Venerable Dean, Lawerance Lamontange, (702) 354-2791, or our chapter advisor, Jason Crum, at (318) 680-6123, with any questions.

Do you haze?
Absolutely not. Contact Spencer Horrell, (985) 264-9634, or Keith Bushey at Acacia International, (888) 345-1904, if you have questions about this.

How do I join?
